The Town of Cochrane is urging anglers to help protect wildlife at Mitford Ponds as troubling amounts of discarded fishing gear continue to be collected from the popular recreation spot.

In June alone, more than 100 fishing hooks and a large bag of tangled fishing line were removed from the area.

Town officials say the waste poses serious dangers. Several birds have died in recent years after becoming ensnared in fishing line or swallowing hooks. The gear can also injure pets and people enjoying the ponds.

The recent death of another goose — strangled by fishing line wrapped around its neck — has prompted renewed discussions between nearby residents, who regularly clean up tackle and line at the ponds, town officials, and the Cochrane Environmental Action Committee. They are looking at pro-active measures to better protect waterfowl.

The town says balancing recreation and conservation depends on everyone doing their part.

“Fishing is a great pastime, but the waste left behind can have devastating impacts,” the town said in a recent social media post. “We’re asking everyone to be part of the solution.”

Signs are posted at both ponds to encourage responsible us of these treasured recreational areas.

Anglers are urged to pack out all equipment and debris, store used line safely, and ensure young fishers understand the risks to wildlife.

People are reminded to keep dogs leashed. There have been attacks on waterfowl at the ponds by unleashed pets.

Mitford Ponds, in Cochrane’s west end, draw year-round visitors for scenic paths, picnic spots, and easy access to the town’s trail system. They are stocked with rainbow and brown trout for recreational catch-and-release fishing, and also serve as a winter hub for skating. Ice fishing is not allowed.
