Cochrane’s first three fixed transit routes roll out Monday, giving residents a new, reliable way to get around town — and free rides for the first two weeks.
The routes officially launch on Aug. 18 when the first bus rolls out at 6:18 a.m., with all rides free until Sept. 1. The early free period is designed to let residents test the new system and get familiar with schedules and digital fare payment options.
“This is a big step forward in Cochrane’s public transit journey,” said Matt Knox, director of social development. “It really took the whole town coming together to make this happen, and I’m very excited for this next stage.”
To help spread the word and answer any questions that may arise, transit reps will be at this Saturday's Cochrane Farmers' Market.
The three routes serve high-demand corridors, linking neighbourhoods like Sunset Ridge, Fireside, and Heritage Hills with key destinations, including downtown Cochrane and the SLS Centre.

They complement the town’s existing on-demand transit service. For example, communities like Bow Meadows and Bow Ridge will still rely on the on-request system, however, they can use that service to connect to the fixed-route buses.
The town plans to add more fixed routes over time, with loops expanding as neighborhoods grow.
Riders continue to have several payment options, including a new hotspot app. Cash also continues to be accepted.
Knox said the town encourages users to try the new system and provide feedback.
“This is an evolving process, and we want to make sure it works well for the community,” he said.
