The Estevan Mermaids are preparing for a busy season and are inviting swimmers of all ages and abilities to join the club. Registration is now open, with preliminary registration closing Sunday. Additional opportunities will be available during citywide registration, and all registration is completed online.
The Mermaids’ programs include Minis, recreational swimmers who perform at the end-of-season water show, limited competitive athletes, and competitive athletes attending multiple competitions. The Minis program is already full, but the club could add an additional Minis session depending on coach availability and interest.
Newcomers can attend a Try-It Night on September 3 from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Coach Amber Mantei explained that older athletes will work with participants to introduce basic moves. “We show them simple skills, like a back layout, and if we get adventurous, a back tuck somersault,” she said.
Mantei added that sessions usually begin with games to help new swimmers feel comfortable in the water. Older athletes then demonstrate advanced skills, showing that while everyone starts with the basics, dedication can lead to impressive abilities. The club emphasizes teamwork, community, and a supportive environment.
Coach Kelsey Potomac highlighted that the sport is inclusive. “Although you see a lot of females, our sport is for all genders, all abilities, and all ages,” she said.
The club aims to grow and help more athletes advance through the levels. Some recreational swimmers are moving up to the limited level, while a few limited swimmers are stepping into competitive. Coaches are excited to see their progress, new routines, and experiences, building on last year’s successes in performance and training.
Potomac also emphasized the volunteer nature of the coaching staff. “All of our coaches are volunteers. I am a past swimmer. Amber has never swum, but she is a parent who has been involved in our club for many years. All our coaches are either former athletes or parents of current or past swimmers. We are always looking for new coaches. No experience is necessary. You learn everything in the course, and we would be glad to have you join us.”
With registration underway and Try-It Night approaching, the Estevan Mermaids are ready for another season of skill-building, fun, and competition.
