From High River film crews to international streaming releases, Alberta’s role on screen is making headlines this month.
Netflix confirmed Season 2 of My Life With the Walter Boys will debut Aug. 28. Based on the young-adult novel by Ali Novak, the series has previously filmed in Cochrane, Crossfield and other communities near Airdrie.
Production on Season 3 began Aug. 6 and is scheduled to wrap Dec. 1. Local media has reported that filming is underway in High River and the surrounding area.
According to ACTRA Alberta’s August production list, several other series are currently or recently filming in Calgary and surrounding areas. Heartland is in production on its 19th season, with filming running May 13 to Aug. 28. A unit shoot for Murdoch Mysteries took place July 30 to Aug. 1. Anna Pigeon — a first-season adaptation of the Nevada Barr novels — began filming July 30 and is scheduled to wrap Nov. 19.
Alongside the filming updates, casting news for The Walter Boys was first reported by Deadline, which said actor Chad Rook will join Season 3 as a recurring guest star in at least four episodes. Netflix has not released details about his character. Returning cast includes Nikki Rodriguez as Jackie Howard, Sarah Rafferty as Katherine Walter, Marc Blucas, Noah LaLonde, Ashby Gentry, Connor Stanhope, Johnny Link, Corey Fogelmanis and Jaylan Evans.
The drama follows Jackie Howard, who moves in with her late mother’s best friend Katherine — and Katherine’s 10 children — after a tragedy upends her life.
Alberta’s screen presence also extended to the Critics Choice Super Awards, where HBO’s The Last of Us won Best Horror Series, Limited Series or Made-for-TV Movie. The Critics Choice Association also named Pedro Pascal Best Actor in the category for his portrayal of Joel.
According to Travel Alberta, “One of HBO’s biggest shows, The Last of Us, was previously filmed in a variety of recognizable locations across Alberta. Starring Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Narcos) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, Becoming Elizabeth), the first season of the show was filmed between July 2021 and June 2022, while some episodes of season two were filmed in Alberta in summer 2024. The series is the largest film production in Alberta’s history, and one of the biggest in Canada. Season one features scenes shot across the province, including in downtown Calgary, the Legislature Building in Edmonton, Fort Macleod, Canmore, and Calgary’s SAIT and Mount Royal University.”
Much of Season 2 was filmed in neighbouring British Columbia.
From Airdrie-area backdrops to High River’s active sets, the productions reflect a busy period for Alberta’s screen industry — with both homegrown filming and award recognition keeping the province in the entertainment spotlight.
