A Red Deer charity that provides critical help to Central Albertans says it is at risk of shutting down after provincial funding cuts.

In a social media post, the Turning Point Society said the financial strain puts clients and the community at risk, particularly with the transition occurring before winter.

Some programs will close at the beginning of November, including:

  • Women’s Program: Pregnancy, parenting and case management supports for women at risk, in poverty and on the streets.

  • Health Promotion: Sexually transmitted and blood-borne infection (STBBI) supports and education, harm reduction supply access, referrals, identification services and more for marginalized and vulnerable people locally and rurally.

  • Test & Treat: STBBI testing and treatment in office and at rural and local agencies and events, including syphilis testing, with a focus on vulnerable populations.

  • Downtown Drop-in: Access to basic needs, wound care, a warm space, phone, bathroom and wraparound supports. The space is open to everyone but is used daily by 80 to 120 people, many experiencing homelessness and complex health needs.

“These cuts are significant, and we are currently strategizing transition and sustainability planning with hopes that there can be a more supportive solution than a full closure of these programs so quickly,” the society said.

Turning Point says the public can help by sharing their experiences, offering support and donating online or in person.

People can also attend the International Overdose Awareness Day event on Aug. 29 in solidarity.

“We love our clients and this work, and we know the services we provide are unique and irreplaceable,” the society said. “This agency, the clients and the community at large are affected, and it’s time to come together to find solutions.”

The Turning Point Society says updates will be shared on its Facebook page and other social media.
