RCMP say an Okotoks man has been arrested in connection with a July 31 house fire and firearms theft in Vulcan County.

“On July 31, 2025, at approximately 12:45 p.m., Vulcan RCMP responded to house fire in Vulcan County. Once the residents were confirmed safe, an investigation into the suspicious nature of the fire was initiated,” police said in a Friday release.

“It was also discovered that a vehicle and several guns had been stolen from the property of the house fire.”

Mounties said that on Aug. 1, near Olds, “a male was observed setting small fires in the middle of the road.”

“The male was then reported to have abandoned a vehicle and departed on foot through a field. Olds RCMP responded and recovered the stolen vehicle along with some of the guns which were stolen the day before in Vulcan County.”

RCMP said collaboration between Vulcan RCMP, Olds RCMP and fire investigators led to an Aug. 13 arrest in Vulcan.

Police say Luke Peterson of Okotoks has been charged by Vulcan RCMP with arson, theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of break and enter and theft, and theft over $5,000.

From Olds RCMP, charges include two counts each of possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized, possession of a firearm obtained by offence, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, careless storage of a firearm, and possession of property obtained by crime.

“After a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, Peterson was remanded into custody with his next court appearance in the Alberta Court of Justice in Lethbridge on Aug. 21, 2025,” RCMP said.

“A second person was also arrested for arson and theft, and she was released on documents to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Lethbridge on Oct. 8, 2025. She cannot be named as the charges have not been sworn before the courts.”
