In the 1989 Grey Cup, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats faced off in what many Canadian football fans regard as the greatest game in Canadian Football League (CFL) history.

And while it’s only the middle of August, it seems the two teams could be on a path to meet in the Grey Cup again, as they lead their respective divisions near the midway point of the 2025 regular season.

On Saturday, the two teams will meet at Mosaic Stadium. The Roughriders are coming off a bye week, while the Tiger-Cats had their six-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the BC Lions.

With an extra week’s rest, there won’t be any changes to the Saskatchewan roster, as they will have the same lineup that they had in Montreal when they defeated the Alouettes two weeks ago.

Returner Mario Alford remains on the one-game injured list with a hip injury. Receiver Shawn Bane Jr also remains on the one-game injured list despite practicing over the last couple of weeks. Dohnte Meyers, Keesean Johnson and Joe Robustelli have entrenched themselves as the starting receivers for the squad.

Samuel Emilus remains on the six-game injured list with a knee injury. Tommy Nield stepped in two weeks ago and collected his first catch and his first touchdown with the Roughriders in Montreal

The Tiger-Cats don’t have the same luck as the Roughriders do when it comes to injuries. Cornerback Jamal Peters will miss Saturday’s game while safety Stavros Katsantonis is listed as a game-time decision. Both players are tied for second in the CFL in interceptions with three.

Other players who will not play for the Tabbies this week, linebacker Ray Wilborn, returner Isaiah Wooden and running back Johnny Augustine.

Running back Kevin Brown, who has spent time with Toronto and Edmonton will be making his debut for the Tiger-Cats on Saturday.

Hamilton is led by Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and receiver Kenny Lawler. Mitchell leads the CFL in passing yards (2,856) and touchdowns (21) and has only thrown three interceptions this year.

Lawler is second in the CFL in receiving yards (783), trailing Toronto’s Damonte Coxie by 11 yards.

The last time the Roughriders met the Tiger-Cats was back in Week 2 in Hamilton with Saskatchewan holding on to a 28-23 win.
