Killarney's Lakeland Regional Library expansion project is still on the table but has been put on hold for an undetermined amount of time.  In the meantime, the library has been able to make improvements in the accessibility into the building with installation of a new ramp, and an electric door.

"We've been working on an exciting accessibility project at the existing building here on Williams Avenue," shares library Administrator, Krista Law.

The previous ramp at the back of the building was built in 1990 and was starting to feel its age.

"It was a wooden ramp, and it was starting to get a little bit bouncy in a way that was not ideal. And so, I've been looking for funds probably for the last three years to upgrade that ramp, and we finally got some money this year, so we were able to put in a new aluminum ramp and stairs at the back door," explains Law. "And we also put in an electric push button door."

To complete the project, they'll be installing a new sidewalk to from the front of the building to the back.

"We have the funds to add a concrete sidewalk from the front of the building around to that ramp so that people, if they are walking or in a wheelchair, they don't have to take a wheelchair or a stroller or any kind of mobility aid through the grass or go through the bumpy back lane."

There is parking at the back of the building for those who would like to use the accessibility access, but for those coming to the building from the front, that new sidewalk will be a nice addition, says Law. "So that's going to be sort of the second part of the project that we're hoping to get done before the summers out."

The project has been funded by the Brandon and Area Community Foundation (BACF) for $14,500 and Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries for $15,000. Should the project exceed these funds the municipality has agreed to pay the difference.

"So, we're very excited to see those upgrades to this building because we know the expansion project could take a very long time. We want to make this building as accessible and welcoming as possible. So, that's a very exciting addition and it's just exciting for us because we've been wanting it for quite a while and it's finally happened!"
