Calgary police say a motorcyclist who hit speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour has been charged after fleeing a traffic stop.

The motorcycle eventually stopped on Range Road 23 north of Highway 772, a location in Rocky View County, approximately northwest of Airdrie.

Police say at about 11:10 a.m. on Aug. 14, a patrol officer saw a motorcycle without a licence plate travelling west on 17th Avenue S.E. near 31st Street S.E.

“When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the motorcyclist drove onto a sidewalk and a pedestrian pathway leading into a park,” police said in a news release Friday.

After driving through the park, police say the motorcyclist returned to the road and drove north through the city, “reaching high rates of speed and disobeying multiple traffic lights and signals.”

Police say additional attempts to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful.

The motorcycle continued north out of Calgary and “eventually stopped on Range Road 23 north of Highway 772, at which point the motorcyclist fled on foot.”

“With assistance from the Alberta RCMP, we apprehended the suspect and took him into custody around noon,” police said.

Joshua Daniel Poirier, 33, is charged with flight from a police officer, dangerous operation, driving while disqualified or prohibited, two counts of failure to comply with a release order, and three counts of failure to comply with a probation order.

He is scheduled to appear in court Monday, Aug. 18.
