The Queer Neighbours Society of Red Deer (QNSRD) is organizing a rally to protest provincial government funding cuts that, they say, threaten vital local services.
The demonstration is set for Sunday (August 24) at 1:00 p.m. outside Red Deer City Hall.
In a statement posted on social media, QNSRD said they were informed of plans to reduce funding for preventive programming in Red Deer, which provides education and support to vulnerable residents.
“These funding cuts will likely have a profoundly negative effect on our community,” the group said. “They indicate a disconnect between the government and the residents of Red Deer and the surrounding areas.”
According to QNSRD, several organizations are already being impacted, including the Sendero Centre, which may no longer be able to offer free counselling, and the Turning Point Society, which has lost most of its preventive education and support funding.
While QNSRD itself does not receive government grants, it says it stands in solidarity with affected organizations and is calling on community members to join the rally in support.
