A sold-out crowd at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday was treated to another dominating performance from the Saskatchewan Roughriders as the Green and White hammered the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 29-9.
Saskatchewan sits alone on top of the Canadian Football League (CFL) standings at 8-1.
Facing a heavy wind in the first quarter, the Roughriders had a slow start to the game as they trailed 6-1. On the other hand, Hamilton was unable to capitalize the wind advantage walking away from the first 15 minutes with only a pair of field goals.
With the wind behind their backs, the green and white went to work early in the second quarter as Quarterback Trevor Harris connected with Dohnte Meyers for a 58-yard bomb that moved Saskatchewan into the lead.
The Roughriders ended the half adding 10 points. Tommy Nield found the end zone for the second straight game. Then, after a Shane Ray sack, Brett Lauther kicked a 59-yard field goal to end the first half as the Saskatchewan led 19-6.
Joe Robustelli added to the Roughriders lead in the second half with the lone touchdown from either side with Saskatchewan ahead 26-6 heading into the final quarter.
Both teams traded field goals to round out the scoring.
Hamilton Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell entered the game as the leading candidate for Most Outstanding Player in the CFL but had a tough afternoon at Mosaic Stadium.
Saskatchewan’s defence pressured the Hamilton QB into six sacks. Micah Johnson led the way with a pair. The Roughriders also recorded a pair of interceptions courtesy of Rolan Milligan and Tevaughn Campbell.
The green and white defence has not allowed a touchdown over their last two games.
This season, Mitchell has thrown five interceptions in total, with three of them in the two games against the Roughriders.
Harris likely pulled ahead of Mitchell in the race for the Most Outstanding Player in the CFL with Saturday’s performance. He had 307 passing yards with 3 touchdowns and one interception.
Running back AJ Ouellette had a strong game with 117 all-purpose yards.
Keesean Johnson had 117 receiving yards with 8 receptions to lead Roughrider receivers.
It was a quiet afternoon for Hamilton’s Kenny Lawler who only had 62 yards with 3 catches.
This week will be another tough test for Saskatchewan, as they head to Calgary on Saturday.
The Stampeders will be coming off their bye week. They trail Saskatchewan by four points for the top spot in the Western Division.
Saturday’s matchup will be the last matchup in the 2025 regular season between the two clubs.
Calgary currently owns the tiebreaker between the two clubs with a 24-10 win on July 12.
The Roughriders need to beat the Stamps by 15 points in order to win the season series between the football clubs.
