The Estevan Fire Department is recruiting new members this summer while also supporting wildfire efforts in northern Saskatchewan.

The Estevan Fire Department is putting the call out for new recruits as they continue their annual drive to bring more people into the service.

Fire Chief Rick Davies says this year’s recruitment push has been stretched over the summer to give more people the chance to apply. “We definitely need some good people,” he explained, adding that anyone who’s on the fence about joining should come down to the station and ask questions. “There are people who really want to do it, and there are others who might be interested but feel like they can’t contribute. We want those people to come talk to us and see what it’s all about.”

To help with that, the department is planning an open house later this summer. While details are still being finalized, Davies says the event will give residents a chance to meet officers, check out the equipment, and learn what it takes to be part of the team.

Alongside local recruitment, Estevan firefighters have also been lending a hand further north as Saskatchewan continues to battle an unprecedented wildfire season. Crews from Estevan were sent to help with structure protection in towns and villages surrounded by forest. “We made sure our area was still covered here at home, but wherever we could assist, we did,” said Davies. “Our guys were working around communities, making sure homes and buildings were safe. Everyone I’ve talked to said it was a great experience.”

He noted that the environment in northern Saskatchewan is very different from Estevan’s, with dense forests and small communities nestled in the trees, a stark contrast to the open, flat terrain of the southeast.

With wildfires reminding everyone of the importance of a strong fire service, the department is hoping to see more people step forward locally. “If you have any interest at all, come down and talk with us,” Davies encouraged.

The Estevan Fire Department continues to serve both at home and across the province, but Chief Davies says their success depends on people right here in the community stepping up. With recruitment underway and an open house planned, the department is encouraging anyone with an interest to take that first step, because having more hands on deck means a safer Estevan for everyone.
