The St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation’s MRI campaign is almost complete, with 96 per cent of its fundraising goal now achieved.
“It feels fantastic, but it doesn’t really feel like the end—it feels like we just started,” said Executive Director Lori Gervais.
The launch of the campaign was daunting, with Gervais having never led a project of this scale before.
“The CT was similar, but when Elaine stepped forward with her donation and this whole thing began, there was no way to know how it would turn out. It’s been unbelievable.”
That donation came from Elaine Walkom, whose $2-million gift kickstarted the campaign.
“It’s exciting to see it all coming together,” Gervais said. “Elaine knows everything has been ordered, and there’s been so much activity—not just with donations, but with the entire southeast Saskatchewan community finding new ways to contribute.”
Work is also underway at the hospital itself, with site surveys complete, vendors arriving, and deadlines approaching.
“Construction will be starting soon, which is exciting because it shows everyone the project is real and happening.”
Gervais said the support has been deeply felt.
“It’s been quite the journey. At times, it’s overwhelming because it’s so personal to everyone—you really get a sense of why this matters. Healthcare touches all of us. Everyone has a reason this is important, whether for themselves or someone they love.”
She said anticipation is already building for the day the MRI officially opens.
“It’s going to be a pretty exciting day when we cut that ribbon and do the first scan—and it’s coming fast.”
The foundation is also preparing for its annual Festival of Trees, now in its 13th year, which will run November 15-16.
“Our gala will be on Saturday, Nov. 15,” said Gervais. “It’s hard to believe we’re already at year 13 of this kickoff-to-Christmas event. We’re really looking forward to it.”
She closed with a message of gratitude.
“Our appreciation is overwhelming and constant. I can’t wait to celebrate with everyone, and when the grand opening happens, the whole community will be part of it. It’s going to be a very exciting day.”
