The spirit of community and care was on full display at Loose Creek Regional Park as Bow Valley Villa held its third annual cornhole tournament, drawing in 32 teams for a day of friendly competition and heartfelt fundraising.
Wanda Richie, one of the managers at Bow Valley Villa, shared that the event is more than just a game; it's a lifeline. “We’re a privatized assisted care home in Oxbow, and we don’t receive any government funding,” Richie explained. “So we’re always having to fundraise to keep our doors open.”
The tournament has become a staple for the Villa, consistently attracting strong participation and support. But fundraising efforts don’t stop there. Richie noted that the Villa is always looking for volunteers to help enrich the lives of its residents. “We love having people come in to do crafts, help with entertainment, or even play music. Our residents really enjoy that,” she said. “It keeps everyone active and brings fresh energy into the building.”
Looking ahead, Bow Valley Villa is preparing for a Summer BBQ Fundraiser on August 29th, designed to be inclusive for residents who may not be able to attend off-site events. “It’s a ‘come meet and visit’ barbecue,” Richie said. “We’ll have burgers, hot dogs, salads, and dessert, all by donation. It’s a great way for people to connect with our residents.”
The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a live performance from Kathy Kyle, promising a lively and heartwarming afternoon.
Richie emphasized that Bow Valley Villa is more than just a care home; it’s a second home for many. “If you’re a senior who’s still independent but just needs a little help, we’re a great choice,” she said.
For those looking to support or get involved, Bow Valley Villa welcomes donations, volunteers, and community engagement year-round.
