The Calgary Rams and Bow Valley Grizzlies’ combined women’s rugby team, Rizz, capped a flawless season by winning the Alberta Women's Premier League provincial championship on Aug. 16, defeating the Edmonton Lepachan Tigers, 58-17.
“It’s super exciting to be a part of that,” said Megan MacLean, vice-president of women’s rugby with the Bow Valley Rugby Club. “The girls are thrilled. It’s a moment that’s been a long time coming.”
MacLean said the team took control early in the championship match.
“We came out and scored first. They came back quickly, but after that initial pressure, we were able to take over,” she said.
It was the redemption sought after the Rizz loss to the LepTigers in last year's final.
Winning all 11 of their matches this season reflects the hard work and dedication of the entire team, said MacLean.
“It’s not an easy thing to come by. It took a lot of work, a lot of drills, and showing up every week to give everything on the field,” MacLean said. “Definitely it's a season for the books. I’ve been doing this for 20 years, so it’s been a good one.”

Fans packed the stands of the top field at the Calgary Rugby Union, adding to the excitement.
“I couldn’t believe it. Our side was packed — you couldn’t squeeze another person in,” MacLean said. “It made it even more special. It was broadcast, so my family on the East Coast could watch from home. I’ve never had that before.”
They also had a partner of one of their players helping to fire up the crowd.
"He did this halftime juggling show and kept the crowd going the entire game. It was really, really cool. There are lots of moms on our team, so it was really cute to see all the kids out cheering for them."
Looking ahead, most players plan to return next season, with winter training leading into the next season.
The team’s journey reflects the power of collaboration between Calgary and Bow Valley rugby communities and a commitment to excellence on the provincial stage.
It was a particularly special moment in history for the Calgary Rams. It was the first of their teams to win a provincial championship.
