Four new areas at the High River General Hospital have been brightened up with new 'smilezones'.

These four family-friendly spaces now have walls that have been repainted with a lot of kid-friendly farm animals, and other fun games for kids have been added.

There's even a cellphone charging station located right in the Emergency Room waiting area.

This all came about from a generous donation from the Ewout and Lynn Heersink Family Foundation in memory of Janet Wilson to the SmileZone Foundation.

Wilson is one of Lynn's sisters who resided in High River before passing away from cancer last year.

You may have seen her around town with her two poodles, which have also been included in the 'smilezone' in the Emergency Room waiting area.

It was the dedicated quality care she received while going through treatment that set the wheels in motion.

The foundation was formed in 2013 with some key businesspeople in southern Ontario, along with NHL star Adam Graves.

"Every child deserves to smile" is their simple message, said Scott Bachly, a Smilezone co-founder who was on hand to thank the Heersink family and share how the spaces were created and developed.

Bachly added that the organization was formed in Oakville, Ontario, so there were more friendly, inviting spaces for children to play at while they are at the hospital.

The four new spaces were put up in no time at all. Bachly said the team worked with the hospital to get the designs just right to reflect our area and then their team did all four installations over the previous weekend.

The organization now has 'smilezones' right across Canada and are planning their 500th installation in St. John's, Newfoundland later this year.

The Maternity Unit now has an enhanced children's corner with lots of bright, warm colours, and one wall is filled with adorable photos of newborns.

Executive director of the High River District Hospital Foundation, Wendy Kennelly, was all smiles thanks to the surprise donation and is looking forward to seeing more smiles around the hospital.

There were no costs incurred with this project because the Smilezone Foundation secured sponsors to help with the build well ahead of time.

High River Town Councillors Michael Nychyk, Jenny Jones and Brenda Walsh were on hand to celebrate the occasion with Nychyk sharing his thanks on behalf of the town for installing the four wonderful new smilezones.
