A local coach has guided Team Saskatchewan to its first-ever medal in beach volleyball at the Canada Games.
Kyle's Brittany Marshal coached Erika Markentin and Alexa Smith to a bronze medal on Sunday as they downed rival Alberta 2-1 to earn a spot on the podium.
Markentin, who plays NCAA Division 1 for California State University Bakersfield, was thrilled to earn some hardware.
"I can't believe we won a medal," she said. "I was dreaming about this last night, and I woke up and I was like that was a dream... We actually did it."
Markentin and Smith knew the importance of their historical win in the sand, earning a medal the province had been shutout on previously.
"Going into each game, knowing we're an underdog fuels us because nobody sees it coming," she said.
