Summer in Water Valley comes alive with laughter, games, the flipping of pancakes and the smell of sizzling barbecue at the annual Water Valley Days this Saturday, Aug. 23.

Last year’s event was a blast, and organizer Arya Ahmadi says this year will be even bigger and better, with several surprises in the works.

“In addition to all the games and competition we had last year, we have some new surprises plus a performance by the Dogpound Litters from 8 to 9:30 p.m. on the Water Valley Stage,” said Ahmadi.

The parade starts at noon down Main Street, but the smart folks show up early for the pancake breakfast at 11 to ease into the rest of the day.

The popular log-sawing competition begins shortly after the parade and is expected to once again draw a crowd to cheer on contestants. There’s also a tea-boiling competition for adults, while chili chefs and cake bakers will be testing their skills against the competition.

For kids, there’s a variety of games, including the Inuit tug-of-war, which sees three contestants pulling each way to win, along with a watermelon-eating contest. That’s in addition to other popular games for children and youth.

The crew from the Stockmen’s Branding Experience is returning and is expected to be busy throughout the day. The celebration wraps up with fireworks after sunset.
