A GoFundMe has raised more than $30,000 for the family of Shelley Thornton, who died in a recent collision.

The fundraiser was created by John Ferguson, manager of Red Deer’s municipal police services, on behalf of Thornton’s co-workers at the RCMP detachment. Thornton worked daily with Ferguson in her role as an administrative assistant.

“Shelly is just a wonderful person, very caring. She was an important part of our team here and she will be greatly missed,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson said staff at the detachment decided to start the fundraiser as a way to support Thornton’s family through their loss.

“We didn’t really have a specific goal in mind and just wanted to do whatever we could to support her family,” Ferguson said. “We understand they are dealing with a lot right now and there will be some expenses they will have to incur in the short term.”

The 46-year-old was also treasurer and secretary for the local CUPE union.

She leaves behind her husband, Bryan, and two children, Isabel and Henry.

Funds raised will help the family cover immediate expenses, daily needs and give them space to grieve without financial strain.

Ferguson says even those unable to give can help by sharing the fundraiser and keeping the family in their thoughts and prayers.
