Airdrie’s Genesis Place pool and aquatics area will close Friday, Aug. 22, and will not reopen on Sept. 13, the city confirmed again in an Aug. 19 social media post.

The post said the shutdown is required for biennial maintenance and investigative work into “unexpected basin complications.” It also highlighted three fall family play programs:

  • Backyard Play – INSIDE at Genesis Place, Wednesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m., starting Sept. 3.

  • Backyard Play – Sport Edition, Sundays from 9 to 11:30 a.m., beginning Sept. 7.

  • Family Track Attack, Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m., also starting Sept. 7.

The family play opportunities were first announced in an Aug. 15 website update, which also confirmed the maintenance now includes investigative assessments of the pool basins, tiling the lane pool, refinishing the dive tank, tile and grout repairs in the leisure pool, replacing acoustic panels and upgrading aquatics area lighting.

That notice said no reopening date has been set. Instead, timelines will be shared once investigative work is complete, with at least one week’s notice before registration resumes for swimming lessons and aquatic certifications.

The city also confirmed that scheduled adjustments to passes and admission pricing have been deferred until the pool reopens.

“We understand these extended closures are disruptive and disappointing,” the Aug. 15 notice said. “We look forward to providing the community clearer timelines and updates as information becomes available.”

The city first announced on Aug. 8 that the pool would not reopen on Sept. 13, projecting at that time the closure would extend “by two weeks – at minimum.” That earlier update also said investigative work on the leisure pool could not begin until after the Aug. 22 shutdown, and listed the tile, grout, panel and lighting work later repeated in the Aug. 15 notice.
