The Weyburn Police Service responded to a traffic collision at the corner of Fifth Street and Prairie Avenue last Tuesday. An investigation was initiated and determined a half-ton truck had failed to stop at a stop sign.

Deputy Chief Shane St. John says the accident was more severe than similar incidents, as one vehicle required towing from the scene.

“A person went through a stop sign striking another vehicle, causing extensive damage to that vehicle. I'm not aware of the full injuries to that other person at this time, but I know the passenger was transported to the hospital by EMS.”

The intersection was controlled but was not a four-way-stop, as St. John explains the driver had failed to yield to the stop sign at all, and the other vehicle had the right-of-way.

“The person who had the right-of-way was going through. The other vehicle had a stop sign, and they went right through it, striking the vehicle. They weren't even paying attention and missed the stop sign completely.”

St. John emphasizes that this is an example of why remaining focused while driving and removing distractions is so important.

The driver of the truck was charged under the Traffic Safety Act.
