Sports Round-Up: Thursday, Aug. 21

Team Sask picked up a pair of bronze medals — one in decathlon and the other for three metre springboard diving —yesterday bringing their total medal count to 10: two gold, three silver, and five bronze.

ARTISTIC SWIMMING

• Saskatchewan Artistic Swimming Duet teams Joley Friesen/Sienna Kuchuran and Bronte Cawkwell/Quynn Middelkoop competed in the preliminary technical event on Wednesday and finished 4th and 8th, respectively, with some clean routines. Tomorrow both pairs will compete in the preliminary free routine at 4:00 PM NST/12:30 PM CST.

ATHLETICS

• High jump: Chelsea Ells and Jocelyn Hanson will compete in Friday's final. Logan Schmidt 
• Long jump: Drew Sundberg and Michael Tetrault will go for the podium in Saturday's final.
• Shot put: Kira Comfort and Jessamy Sundby had some strong throws today and will compete in Saturday's final. 
• 200m: In the women's heats, both Saskatchewan women (Grace Igbiki and Hailee Woodhouse) will advance to Saturday's final. In the men's Special Olympics race, Bradyn Giraudier led the way in the prelims and will race for gold on Saturday. 
• 800m: After the heats, all four Saskatchewan 800m runners (Ben Gates, Michael Hussey, Jenna Conrad, and Naysa Woods) will compete in the finals on Saturday.
• 400m: Ayva Delaney will advance to the medal heat on Saturday in the women's wheelchair event, while Brendan Cote Williamson will do the same in the Para Ambulatory men's race.
• 100mH: Timi Adelugba and Selena Keyowski ran strong in the heats and will race on Saturday. On the men's side, catch Liam Oster in Saturday's final.

BASEBALL (F)

• Saskatchewan’s inaugural female Baseball team had another strong day, winning both games (22-0 against PEI and 12-1 against New Brunswick. Next up is Nova Scotia at 1:00 PM NST/9:30 AM CST, where they could go straight to the semifinal on Saturday afternoon.

BOX LACROSSE (M)

• Saskatchewan’s male Box Lacrosse team continued its winning streak on Wednesday, first finding victory over Manitoba (3-5) and then New Brunswick (3-7). Next up is Newfoundland at 1:00 PM NST/9:30 AM CST and then onto the quarterfinals beginning on Friday. Standouts in the NB game included #4 Kale Kurtz, #9 James Mahissier, #51 Caleb Crossman, #19 Kashton Smith, and #78 Chase Lehner.

CYCLING (MOUNTAIN BIKE)

• Isaac McMurray had a strong day on a technical Cross Country course where he completed six of seven laps before getting pulled. Friday is the team relay in Mountain Bike – an issue for a team fielding one athlete. At Tuesday’s sport technical meeting, organizers proposed a composite relay team made up of McMurray and Yukon’s two t be eligible for a medal, this is what the Canada Games is all about.

DIVING

• Saskatchewan’s divers stayed on a roll after Tuesday night’s gold and silver in the women’s artistic. Today was the 1m Springboard event for men and 3m Springboard for women. After the morning preliminaries, Freddie Moffat and Kash Tarasoff are getting set to compete in Wednesday night’s finals (6:00 PM NST/2:30 PM CST). On the women’s side, Lila Stewart is poised to go for gold once more with the top-scored dive in the prelims. Stewart, Isa Koop, and Finlee Sharp will compete in the finals tonight at 8:00 PM NST/4:30 PM CST.

GOLF

• After two rounds, Ethan Hunter sits in third place in the men’s individual event (74/75). Ryan Mosher golfed 77 and 77 for 11th going into Thursday’s round 3. Grace Odnokon (81/86) and Tayla Perry (94/89) will tee off tomorrow as well in round 3, starting at 8:50 AM NST/5:20 AM CST. Saskatchewan currently sits in sixth place in the team event.

SOCCER (F)

• Team Sask took a 2-1 loss to home Team NL. Their next game will be on Saturday at 10:30 AM NST/7:00 AM CST against PEI. Tomorrow on the agenda for the women’s soccer team are a few “only in Newfoundland” opportunities: firing the Noon Day Gun at Signal Hill National Historical Site and going on a whale watching tour off the coast!

SOFTBALL (M)

• After yesterday’s rain delays and postponements, the men’s Softball team were able to have their first game on Wednesday morning. After being down 3-0, Saskatchewan scored 7 in one inning, featuring a home run by Rayn Ray. In the bottom of the sixth, they scored 6 more to enact the run rule. Owen Nash also impressed with a double and two singles. The team toppled Alberta 13-5 in the end and will next meet Quebec at 4:30 PM NST/1:00 PM CST, followed by Manitoba at 8:00 PM NST/4:30 PM CST.

VOLLEYBALL (M/F)

• It was a great day on the court for both the men’s and women’s teams. In the morning, the men’s team took BC in four sets. The women played Team NB and won 3-0. Both are undefeated after two games; tomorrow the women will play likewise undefeated Manitoba at 4:30 PM NST/1:00 PM CST, and the men will play Quebec at 2:00 PM NST/10:30 AM CST. At the 1989 Canada Summer Games in Saskatoon, both Volleyball teams stood on the podium; this year’s tournament will be one to watch.

WRESTLING

• Team Sask Wrestling opened up their competition today with matches against New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Against NB the men’s team won 9-2, and the female team defeated Nova Scotia 10 matches to one. Seven of the wins were pins in the first period. Friday will conclude the team events, and Saturday will be nonstop energy with the individual medal matches.

The Toronto Blue Jays closed their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 1–2 loss last night, they'll take the day off before heading to Miami to take on the Marlins for a three-game weekend set.

And we've got Thursday night football action — the Blue Bombers are in Montreal facing off against the Alouettes at 4:30. The Saskatchewan Roughriders are back in action this weekend, they play the Stampeders in Calgary Saturday at 4 p.m.
