The Rural Municipality of Weyburn has launched a new mass notification system this week to provide residents with direct information on local matters. The system, known as Voyent Alert!, will deliver municipal updates directly to subscribers via an app, text message, phone call, or email.
According to RM officials, the system was implemented to bridge communication gaps, particularly for residents who may not frequently use social media. Alerts will be specific to the RM and will cover both routine notifications, such as road work, pest control visits, and property tax deadlines, as well as emergency situations when required. This service is distinct from the broader provincial SaskAlert system.
A key feature highlighted by the RM is its accessibility. A smartphone is not required to receive alerts. Users can register a phone number to receive automated voice calls or text messages, making the service available to all residents regardless of their technology.
The choice of Voyent Alert! creates a unified platform for local information, as the system is already in use by both the City of Weyburn and the Weyburn Utility Board. This allows residents to receive notifications from all three municipal bodies through one familiar service.
Residents and frequent travellers through the RM can register for the free service in several ways: They can visit the online registration portal offered by Voyent, or they can download the Voyent Alert! app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. They can also scan the QR code that is currently on the RM’s social media pages and will be in an upcoming newsletter that will be delivered with tax notices this week.
During registration, officials recommend that users select the “use location” option and place a digital pin on their specific RM property to ensure they receive the most accurate alerts.
While most initial alerts will be broadcast to all subscribers, the RM has indicated that messages may be targeted by division in the future. The primary message from the RM to its residents is to “stay informed, stay connected” by signing up for the new service.
