Wednesday was set up as a very impactful day for weather in the southeast, with near-record-breaking heat and severe storms coming into the area to make for quite the day. Environment and Climate Change Canada tracked that coming in, with a heat warning and even a tornado watch going up in some areas.

Meteorologist Crawford Luke says what actually hit the area was quite heated, but not quite record-breaking.

"We topped out at 33.8 degrees in Estevan. The old record, however, was 36.7 from 1942. So, no new records for Estevan, and just looking across the area, I don't think we set any new records in the province yesterday. It looks like it was a pretty hot day, but not quite hot enough for new records."

Similarly, conditions for a tornado and severe thunderstorms were present in the southeast, but Luke says those failed to generate any severe weather.

"As far as southeast Saskatchewan's concerned, at least, maybe a bit of a bust. We were kind of thinking, we weren't sure if storms would go early enough or not to be in southeast Saskatchewan. They ended up not forming until later. Just looks like, I guess we'd call it a cap. So basically, the atmosphere was kind of preventing thunderstorms from forming. It looks like it was just a bit too strong yesterday."

Those storms instead hit over in Manitoba, where Luke says a few areas did get quite the storm instead of us.

"We ended up getting a lot of storms kind of between Brandon, Manitoba, and then eastwards to Portage and Winnipeg. Some of those areas got 100 millimetres of rain last night, and some hail up to the size of golf balls. Actually had a report of tennis ball-sized hail in Inglis, Manitoba, a bit further north. But yeah, as far as southeast Saskatchewan, we had basically nothing."

The skies may see some light storms today, but Environment Canada's forecast has conditions clear and cool heading into the weekend for the southeast.
