Hillcrest School is welcoming a familiar face into a new role this fall. Shannon Brown, who has served as the school’s learning support teacher for the past six years, is now stepping into the position of principal, and she’s bringing both excitement and a deep sense of community with her.
“I’m very excited, but extremely nervous at the same time,” Brown admitted during a recent interview. “Hillcrest has been my home for years, and I’m honoured to lead such a caring and vibrant school.”
Brown’s leadership begins in a milestone year for Hillcrest, which is celebrating its 65th birthday. The school will mark the occasion with a Back-to-School BBQ on September 24th at 6:00 p.m., featuring a birthday cake and a warm welcome for families.
But Brown’s focus goes beyond celebrations. She’s passionate about student well-being and community involvement, especially through programs like the Breakfast Club, which United Way Estevan supports.
The Breakfast Club resumes on September 3rd, and Brown encourages community members to volunteer. “Most volunteers arrive around 7:45 a.m. and are done by 8:10,” she explained. “It’s a simple way to make a big impact.”
Families will also have a chance to meet teachers and drop off backpacks during a Backpack Drop-Off event on August 28th from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. “It’s a great way to ease into the school year and see our freshly cleaned school,” Brown said.
Another highlight for students will be the United Way performance on October 17th, where every grade level will participate. “It’s a big deal for our students, they get to ride the bus, be on TV, and showcase their talents,” Brown said.
As she begins her journey as principal, Shannon Brown is focused on building strong relationships, fostering joy in learning, and continuing Hillcrest’s legacy of community care.
