Portable signs are used by organizations in the community to promote their business or event but need to be used safely and responsibly. This is why the City of Weyburn bylaw outlines the rules surrounding the use of portable signs.
Deputy Chief Shane St. John reminds that these guidelines are outlined to everyone who receives a permit, which is required to place a portable sign in the city.
“Make sure you get a permit with the city for a sign because you want to make sure it's put in the appropriate place so it's not blocking anything, obstructing a different sign or a street, or it's in an area that could distract drivers.”
These rules are crucial in maintaining visibility at intersections, keeping walkways clear, and preventing hazards or distractions for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Permits can be applied for through the City. Permit holders are responsible for ensuring signs are placed only in approved locations with contact information clearly visible. St. John explains that those who fail to do so may see police intervene.
“If a complaint came in, it might be something we just talk to them about because they're not aware and make them aware. If it's an ongoing issue, then for sure they could receive a ticket.”
