The City of Weyburn has announced a new name for Crescent Point Place, formerly known to long-time community members as the Colosseum. As of September 1st, Weyburn's primary hockey arena will be called Whitecap Resources Centre.

Director of Leisure Services, Richard Henning, said the naming rights agreement with Whitecap Resources Inc. is a one-year agreement, as the facility had been set to become Veren Place this fall, until a merger this spring had Veren (formerly Crescent Point Energy) taken over by Whitecap Resources.

"This is just finishing up that contract, which we are more than happy and ecstatic that Whitecap is honouring that."

With the name change, signage will be changing as well in the coming weeks, likely an illuminated logo sign on the north entrance of the arena.

"We'll do the removal of the Crescent Point name within the building and on the exterior, and then we'll replace as many as is required to make sure that Whitecap Resources Centre is identified as the name. We want to make sure any signage we put up is representative of Whitecap Resources for their investment in the community and the facility."

The City will release a new sponsorship package this fall for organizations interested in future naming rights opportunities.

"Whitecap has given us the permission that we can actively go out and seek further sponsorship for the coming years after this," noted Henning.

In a press release, Henning said this is a good example of how local partnerships can strengthen the services the City provides to the community.

"At Whitecap Resources, we believe in building stronger communities by investing in the health and well-being of our youth. We’re proud to support the Weyburn community, creating more opportunities for children to be active, stay healthy, and develop lifelong skills through play and sport. We look forward to a great winter season at the arena and to continue our support of youth in the Weyburn area for years to come," said Grant Fagerheim, President & CEO, Whitecap Resources Inc.

Businesses looking to support one of Weyburn’s most active public facilities are encouraged to contact Richard Henning.
