A Portage la Prairie man has been charged after waving a hatchet and yelling threats out of a window at a residence on Saskatchewan Avenue East.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on August 21, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a disturbance involving a weapon at a residence.

Officers quickly responded and saw a male yelling threats out of a third-story window at pedestrians on the street. At one point, witnesses observed the suspect waving a hatchet.

To ensure public safety, police contained the suspect inside his apartment and repeatedly called for him to surrender. He was advised to exit his residence, but did not comply with police orders.

RCMP, along with assistance from the Manitoba RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was granted an entry warrant and was able to  enter the suite and arrest the male without further incident.

A 52-year-old man from Portage la Prairie has been charged with uttering threats against a person, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, and resist/obstruct public officer.

He was remanded for a later court date.

The investigation continues.
