The Nicholson Centre was buzzing with energy on August 23, as the Southeast Saskatchewan Martial Arts Summit brought together seven local clubs for a full day of demonstrations, seminars, and community connection.
Organized by Sensei Robert Blowatt of Genki Martial Arts in Frobisher, the summit aimed to showcase the depth and diversity of martial arts in the region. “People are like, ‘OK, what’s it about? I’m interested in doing martial arts, but there isn’t a platform for that.’ This gives them that opportunity,” said Blowatt.
The event featured sessions from each participating club, offering attendees a hands-on introduction to styles ranging from Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Filipino Kali and Kenpo. Blowatt emphasized that the summit wasn’t just for seasoned martial artists. “I just love learning about it. I’m going to be participating too. Understanding the styles and their histories, and talking with other instructors, is such a great learning environment,” he said.
With over 40 people in attendance, including instructors and students, the summit created a welcoming space for newcomers and veterans alike. “This is just scratching the surface. If it’s successful this year, I hope to expand on it,” Blowatt added.
The event also served as a timely launchpad for fall registration at many local clubs. Blowatt encouraged anyone curious about martial arts to reach out. “The Clubs will show you what they are about, their philosophy, and provide an introduction to their styles.”
