The Cochrane Legion is set to get a much-needed facelift this fall, and it’s all thanks to the efforts of Cochrane resident Phonsie Corcoran and his longtime connections in the community.

Corcoran, a Legion member and local business owner, helped bring Avalon Master Builder on board to donate time and manpower to paint the Legion’s upper level. Avalon, which is currently building in Greystone, will supply staff and cover the costs of the project.

“The Legion needs a lot of work. A fresh coat of paint is a good start to making the space more welcoming,” said Corcoran. “This is about giving back to our veterans and making the Legion a place people want to come to.”

The project will happen right after Remembrance Day, with volunteers expected to tackle the job in just a couple of days. Corcoran says the plan is to repaint the upstairs, refresh the bathrooms, and give the space a brighter, more inviting feel.

He also has a personal way of showing his thanks. “When everyone’s working, I’m going to cook them some fresh Newfoundland fish for dinner,” Corcoran said with a laugh. “If people want to come out and help, I’ll cook you fish and chips all day long.”

Corcoran says the paint job is just one step in a larger effort to revitalize the Legion, which has struggled with finances and declining attendance in recent years. A new bar is also on the wish list, with hopes of raising the $30,000–40,000 needed for upgrades.

“My goal is to make Cochrane’s Legion the best one in Alberta,” said Corcoran. “It’s about supporting our veterans and creating a space the whole community can be proud of.”

The work is expected to start November 12 or 13, with volunteers encouraged to lend a hand.
