Two more Cochranites who were part of Team Alberta are returning with medals from the Canada Summer Games that wrapped up yesterday in St. John’s, N.L.
Leyton Balint, 18, won a silver medal as a member of Alberta’s women’s volleyball team.
The team faced Ontario in the final after going undefeated in the preliminary round and through two playoff rounds. Alberta dug deep but ultimately fell 3–1 in a hard-fought match.

Alberta’s men’s box lacrosse team, which included Cochrane coach Kevin Dostie, once again needed overtime in the bronze-medal game. This time, Alberta came out on top, scoring the winner in extra time to secure a 6–5 victory over Nova Scotia.

Earlier in the games, Cochrane’s Reese Sellwood won silver with Alberta’s women’s lacrosse team, and Lucas Kohlman won silver with Alberta’s men’s soccer team
Cochrane’s Ryan Hegarity, Elise Hagen and Jett Hasiuk all competed in track and field, advancing to several finals. Esther Sieben was part of the coaching staff.

Susanne and Colin McArthur were involved with Alberta’s mountain biking team, with Susanne serving as coach and Colin providing technical support. Sophie Heldman coached Alberta’s sailing team.
Karen Dommett was a member of the Alberta mission staff.
The Games closed yesterday with Alberta winning 81 medals: 22 gold, 30 silver and 29 bronze. That’s down from the 111 medals won in 2022.
The Canada Summer Games brought together more than 5,000 athletes, managers and coaches, including nearly 500 from Alberta, to compete in 19 sports at the country’s largest multi-sport event.
