The City of Weyburn's summer programming will soon be coming to an end, and certain amenities will be closing for the season.
The last day for swimming at the Weyburn Leisure Centre's outdoor pool is on Labour Day, September 1st, and with students returning to classes next week, the summer programs like the Summer Fun Zone day camp are wrapping up this week.
While their jobs are temporary, Communications Coordinator Paige Tenbult said the summer students and seasonal employees are highly valued by the City.
"The City just gives a huge heartfelt thank you to the summer students and our seasonal staff. They work in everything from summer camps, the Mobile Play Park, Lifeguarding at the Weyburn Leisure Centre, and the Young Fellows Paddling Pool. They're at our museums, they're in our parks department, our public works crews, City Hall."
"Every single one of them just plays a huge role in making sure that we can deliver the services through that summer period and for the community to enjoy the leisure programming all summer long."
Some summer students return to their posts each summer until they graduate from University.
"Our museum staff, we find that they tend to be recurring over a few years, and the same with a lot of our lifeguards and summer camps. We see a lot of returning faces when we do orientation at the beginning of the summer season," Tenbult noted. "We've heard great feedback from them on their time with us, and we also just incredibly enjoyed working alongside them."
She said the seasonal staff are a significant part of the Parks program, and the additional summer leisure programming is a big part of providing an enriching summer for the community.
"We have more facilities open, the outdoor pool, the Young Fellows paddling pool, and right now we're getting the rinks ready. So there's just a lot of work that goes into the spring and specifically the summer operations."
Tenbult noted that the City posts the summer positions each year in late winter, and they are always needed.
