The driver of a vehicle involved in a single-vehicle collision on Deerfoot Trail southeast has passed away.
At roughly 1:25 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, a 2010 Cobra, driven by a man in his 50s, was travelling southbound on Deerfoot Trail S.E.
As the vehicle approached the overpass for Seton Boulevard S.E., the vehicle began to travel on the righthand shoulder of the roadway, as the lanes reduced.
It was then that the vehicle struck as temporary road construction sign.
The vehicle then struck a cable fence separating traffic from the Seton Boulevard S.E. ramp, and continued on the grassy median, where the driver was ejected from the vehicle.
The driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he later passed away.
According to the Calgary Police, so far this year, there have been 25 fatal collisions on Calgary's roads, including five fatal motorcycle collisions.
"Road safety is everyone’s responsibility," explained Inspector Kurt Jacobs of the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section in a media release. "In 2024, 29 fatal collisions occurred in Calgary and unfortunately, this year, we are on track to meet or surpass that number. Together, law enforcement, community partners and Calgarians can help ensure everyone returns home at the end of the day. Slowing down, watching for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists, and driving according to the road and weather conditions, are all part of keeping people safe."
