The Herman Prior Activity Centre is heading into a packed fall schedule, with several major events lined up. Executive Director Kathy Bryce says the building is already buzzing as preparations come together.

One of the highlights this week is the annual Rainbow Auction in partnership with Sunset Palliative Care, hosted inside the auditorium. The auction coincides with the popular car hop, which has become a staple for the centre.

“People can come inside or eat outside, whichever they prefer,” notes Bryce. “They buy their hamburger or hot dog meal from Herman Prior, then head over to the Rainbow Auction to put their tickets in. All the draws will be made Thursday evening, so the atmosphere is going to be lively.”

Busy summer and new staff support

Bryce explains that, unlike most years, the summer season did not slow down. The centre saw a steady stream of visitors enjoying lunch, coffee, pool, and social time.

“The summer has gone really, really well,” says Bryce. “Normally everything slows down, but this year it didn’t. We had people in and out all summer, and it’s tenfold now. I’m so thankful for having two office staff working with me.”

She adds that the centre has benefited greatly from new hires. A part-time administrative assistant joined in 2023, and a full-time staff member started last November, giving the team three people in the office for the first time.

“What a wonderful difference that has made,” continues Bryce.

Membership steady with growth expected

Membership, which has steadily climbed over recent years, is holding steady for now. Bryce estimates current numbers at about 745.

“It’s kind of plateaued right now,” notes Bryce. “That’s because a lot of people go away for the summer and renew their membership in the fall. September is usually when we see an increase.”

She says the centre continues to manage high demand for rentals and catering, keeping the schedule packed and the team busy.

Programming full, with new Tai Chi class

This fall, Bryce says there are few brand-new programs because current offerings remain popular. Still, a new beginner Tai Chi class will start Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m., led by members of the existing group.

“Members have been asking for that,” says Bryce. “We were able to work it out, so they’ll be instructing the beginners. Other than that, our schedule is jam-packed, and we don’t really have the space to add much else right now.”

Looking ahead to September

With all eyes on this Thursday’s car hop, Bryce says anticipation is high for another successful event. The car hop runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will debut a special Herman Prior “signature dog.”

“We have our own recipe hot dogs that we’re excited to serve,” adds Bryce.

The centre also has more events scheduled, including the launch of the Song Catcher series on September 21 with Little Miss Johanna Atchison, followed by the annual open house on September 25. Day trips for seniors are also planned throughout the month.

“So yes, very busy,” continues Bryce.
