The city’s updated candidate register as of Tuesday afternoon shows Douglass as the lone mayoral hopeful so far, less than a month before the Sept. 22 nomination deadline. Incumbent Mayor Peter Brown has not announced whether he will seek re-election.
In his campaign profile, Douglass said he chose to run because he is “very passionate about our community and I believe in Airdrie’s future.”
Ten others are running for council: Simisola Obasan, Tomisin (Tomi) Adenipekun, Chad Stewart, incumbent Darrell Belyk, Chris Glass, Rekha Mehay, Jay Raymundo, Mo Fahad Shaukat, Maulik Shah and Anthony Morvillo.
Among incumbents, only Belyk has filed. Fellow incumbent Ron Chapman appears on the list of those who have filed a notice of intent to run but have not yet submitted nomination papers.
Others with notices of intent include Joshua Elo, Matthew Kangal, Shaganpreet S. Sooch, Nicole Brown and Justin Cooper. Douglass’s name also still appears on the notice of intent list in addition to the nominated candidates list.
Incumbent councillors Al Jones, Candice Kolson, Tina Petrow and Heather Spearman have not announced their re-election plans.
Airdrie council is comprised of seven members. The mayor is the chief elected official. The deputy mayor rotates every eight months, initially assigned by seniority on council and then by vote count.
