A celebration of culture is breaking out across the country this fall, and Weyburn is not exempt. Culture Days runs from September 19th to October 4th featuring free events that highlight cultural diversity in Canada and the communities within it.

Curator for the Weyburn Art Gallery, Regan Lanning, says plans are well underway for this year's event.

“In Weyburn, we are hosting more than 10 events, possibly more as the organization continues, and our big one-day event, we're calling Culturepalooza and that's happening on October 4th. But we have events that are running all throughout Culture Days.”

Lanning notes some of the main events planned so far, including a Holi-Inspired Colour Fun Run, inspired by the Hindu festival, a Treaty 4 Timeline Walk for Reconciliation, Indian cultural dance performances, and creative activities like tile making and lino cutting.

She says the events lined up for the celebration are intentionally designed to reflect the cultures present in the community.

“I go out of my way to do that. I'm the coordinator. I reach out to other local organizations and local community groups to see if they'd be interested in what they could offer us. It's not me dictating what other people do. It's other people coming to me with their ideas.”

Lanning believes cultural awareness is important, and outlines why she works to ensure Culture Days are reflective of those within the community.

“As Canada changes, as Saskatchewan changes, as Weyburn changes, we only get stronger.”

“You learn so much and you get so enriched and you grow as a human when we trade these cultural norms and these practices and we learn from each other. I'm a better person the more I learn about other people.”
