Central Alberta is getting ready to turn teal as Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) launches its annual "Turn the Town Teal" campaign to raise awareness about the power of mentoring as part of the September month-long celebration of BBBS.
The campaign invites businesses and organizations in Lacombe, Blackfalds, Bentley, and Clive to decorate their storefronts and offices in teal, the official colour of BBBS.
Each participating business receives a free kit filled with teal decorations such as tablecloths, streamers, and pompoms and kits are being delivered from today (August 27) through to Friday (August 29), so businesses are ready to showcase their support by September 1.
“This year we have so far 26 businesses and organizations already signed up, including grocery stores, gas stations, and other local nonprofits,” said Jen Harty, Community Engagement Director with BBBS. “It just really brings the community together, and we love it because when we deliver the kits, we get to connect, say hi, and share updates.”
Harty said the teal decorations help create an instant association between the colour and mentoring. “When people walk into these businesses and see teal, they know it’s BBBS, and they know what we’re up to,” she explained.
Throughout September, the teal displays will be paired with information on BBBS events and fundraisers, and tables will be set up at local grocery stores to further promote the work that BBBS does to support local youth.
“It’s so much fun to drive around the communities and see teal everywhere,” said Harty who also says that some businesses save their decorations each year so that when they sign up again, they can make a larger teal display to further the impact and show more support.
