Estevan’s baseball community continues to shine on the national stage, thanks to the dedication of longtime umpire and mentor Kevin Culy. This summer, Culy traveled to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to officiate at the 22U Baseball Canada Championship, marking his 10th national tournament appearance.

As the Umpire Director for Baseball Operations in Estevan and Zone 1 Umpire Director for Baseball Saskatchewan, Culy plays a key role in developing and supporting umpires across the southeast region. His journey to Dartmouth was the result of years of involvement with Baseball Saskatchewan and Baseball Canada, where his experience and leadership have earned him national recognition.

“It’s just part of the process,” said Culy. “Once you’ve been involved in the program long enough and achieved a certain level of ability, they start sending you to national tournaments.”

Beyond officiating, Culy is passionate about mentoring the next generation of umpires. He teaches clinics, coordinates scheduling, and works directly with young officials to ensure they feel confident and supported on the field.

“I make sure they’re properly coached and mentored so they can feel comfortable and in a safe place,” he explained.

Culy also spoke about the camaraderie that comes with officiating at the national level. Many of the umpires he worked with in Dartmouth were familiar faces from previous tournaments, highlighting the close-knit nature of the baseball officiating community.

“You get to refresh some old relationships and have some laughs,” he said.

With a decade of national experience and a deep commitment to local development, Kevin Culy continues to be a driving force in Estevan’s baseball scene, proving that grassroots dedication can lead to national impact.
