For one night in September, Winkler will become the stage for a national comedy milestone. Local audiences won’t just be watching comedian Matt Falk perform — they’ll be part of the live taping of his next comedy special at the P.W. Enns Centennial Concert Hall. Tickets are $22.50 in advance ($26 at the door), recommended for ages 14+. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Why a live taping in Winkler

Falk said he loves performing in Winkler and wanted to capture the unique energy only a hometown audience can bring. He explained, “Stand-up is meant to be live. When you tape it, you want the people watching later to feel like they were in the room. That is why doing it in front of a real audience is so important.”

For him, a recording like this is as much about the people in the seats as it is about the material. “We are in the moment having fun, and it is going to remain,” he said. “If I do not get a joke right, I will stop, go back, and do it again. Those in-between moments are only for the live audience. They will be part of the special forever with their laughter.”

Getting to know Matt Falk

Falk’s humor often comes from everyday life. During our chat he laughed about growing up in southern Manitoba and said, “I always knew I wanted to make people laugh, but I did not always know how. As a kid I was telling jokes in school and then realizing the teacher was not laughing quite as hard as the rest of the class.”

He also admitted he is his own toughest critic. “I rewrite everything. A joke might take months before I feel it is ready to bring to a stage. By the time people hear it, I have told it to my wife, my kids, and sometimes even my dog,” he joked. That persistence is part of what makes his shows polished and fast-moving.

Comedy, Falk said, is more than just punchlines. “When people come to a show, I want them to forget about their stress for an hour and laugh together. That is the joy of live comedy, and why this taping is going to be so special.”

Community pride and a made in Winkler milestone

The taping is happening in a venue Falk has long admired. “I remember the first time I set foot on the Centennial Concert Hall stage and thought, this is an incredible theatre. Acoustically and visually it is a gem. When it came time to film my comedy special, I am so excited it is happening here,” he said.

The timing could not have been better. “It was funny, our mayor, Henry Siemens, called me just at the right time about this show. I thought, why not? Winkler seems like a great place to bring live comedy,” Falk shared.

That sense of pride carries over to how he sees the community. “This one feels like it is going to be really special. The team is ready, the material has been worked on, and I love this community. I cannot wait,” he said.

What the night will feel like

Expect laughs, a little vulnerability, and the thrill of capturing it all in one go. Falk summed it up by saying, “You only get one shot at a live taping. You cannot redo it, and that is what makes it thrilling. I am pumped for the crowd to help shape how this special plays on screen.”

He could not resist a little self-deprecating humor about the responsibility of recording clean takes. “Know yourself and do not show up with a weird laugh, or sit near the back. I am kidding a little, but your laughter will be part of it, so come ready to have fun.”
