This summer, the Estevan Public Youth Centre (EPYC) welcomed Osama Kamel as a summer student, where he took on a leadership role coordinating youth events and helping build a vibrant, supportive environment. From sports in the parking lot to themed contests and trivia nights, Osama’s creativity and enthusiasm made a lasting impression.
“My summer so far has been amazing,” Osama shared. “I really loved and enjoyed working with both the staff and all the youth. I wanted to come in with a positive attitude and kind of bring up the morale, and I feel that I did.”
Osama’s academic focus, kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan, shaped much of his approach at EPYC. He brought physical activity and wellness into the programming, emphasizing not just movement, but mindset. “You kind of have to have that element where you believe in yourself,” he said, “and use that to help the youth trust themselves and build confidence.”
Beyond regular programming, Osama helped launch extra Monday night events with EPYC staff member Bonnie, including a “Hands Off Spaghetti” contest, a mystery box TikTok challenge, and music trivia. He also supported larger community events like the Squid Games-themed family night and a school supply drive in partnership with the local radio station. “I wasn’t actually aware 100% that it was happening,” he laughed, “but it was amazing. Lots of supplies, and lots of donations.”
As the summer winds down, Osama is preparing to return to Saskatoon for another year of university. While he’s excited to dive into his studies, he admits he’ll miss EPYC and the community connections he built. “I’m definitely ready to get into the new school year with a fresh attitude,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll do well.”
Looking ahead, Osama is keeping his options open. “But I definitely would love to come back and give back to the community again in the future," he said.
EPYC staff and youth alike will surely be cheering him on.
