The Airdrie Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a virtual municipal candidates forum on Sept. 29 ahead of Airdrie’s Oct. 20 election.

The chamber said the event will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. MDT on Zoom and is free to the public, with a business focus in mind.

Council candidates will deliver introductions and answer prepared questions, followed by mayoral candidates. Registration is recommended, with a link to the forum to be emailed to registrants and posted on the chamber’s event page by Sept. 26.

Residents are being asked to submit questions in advance as part of the registration process. The chamber said no questions will be taken from the floor during the live event, and that submissions may not be asked due to time restrictions.

The chamber said the forum will be recorded and a link to the video will be posted on its event page within 24 hours.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the City of Airdrie’s public candidate registry listed Dave Douglass as the sole mayoral candidate.

Council candidates who have filed nomination papers — in the order submitted, the city said — are Simisola Obasan, Tomisin (Tomi) Adenipekun, Chad Stewart, Darrell Belyk, Chris Glass, Rekha Mehay, Jay Raymundo, Mo Fahad Shaukat, Maulik Shah and Anthony Morvillo.

Among incumbents, only Belyk has filed. Fellow incumbent Ron Chapman appears on the list of those who have filed a notice of intent to run but have not yet submitted nomination papers. Other notices of intent include Joshua Elo, Matthew Kangal, Shaganpreet S. Sooch, Nicole Brown and Justin Cooper. Douglass also appears on the notice of intent list in addition to the nominated candidates list.

Incumbent councillors Al Jones, Candice Kolson, Tina Petrow and Heather Spearman have not filed nomination papers or notices of intent.

According to the City of Airdrie, council has a full-time mayor and six part-time councillors who are elected every four years.

According to the chamber, all candidates will be invited to the forum by Sept. 22, with confirmed participants to be listed on the event page.

The chamber said it is politically non-partisan and does not endorse any candidate.

The city said advance voting will take place at the Town and Country Centre on Oct. 8, 11, 14 and 16.

Advance voting will also be held at City Hall from Oct. 6 to 10 between 4:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., and from Oct. 14 to 17 between 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Election Day is Oct. 20, the city said.
