A passion for pairing: The Winehouse celebrates 25 years of community and curation.
Categories

For over two decades, the winehouse has quietly grown into a cornerstone of Winnipeg's wine scene. Nestled in Kenaston Common, the family-run store has been helping locals find the perfect bottle for any occasion since 1999.

The story began with Tico Cornejo, whose love of food, wine, and hospitality inspired him and his wife Karen to open the shop, originally called Pembina Fine Wines. After Tico's sudden passing in 2020, Karen and their children took the reins, keeping the vision alive. Today, the winehouse continues to thrive under their care, with a team that shares their passion.

"Wine brings people together," says general manager Marlies Tibbs. "Tico believed in that, and we try to honour it every day."

Knowledgeable staff and a welcoming space

Part of what sets the winehouse apart is its approachable atmosphere and experienced staff. The team includes everyone from young wine enthusiasts working toward certification to retirees who have travelled the world exploring vineyards.

"We all bring something different," Tibbs explains. "The goal is always to help customers discover something they'll truly enjoy."

The store itself is thoughtfully laid out. Wines are arranged by country, with separate sections for rosé and sparkling wines. An enclosed cellar holds aged treasures and premium gifts, while the newly-opened the wine bar at the winehouse offers guests a chance to taste and explore.

Online convenience and custom offerings

The winehouse has embraced technology without losing its personal touch. The website lets users browse by country, grape variety, body, and more. Customers can order anything from a single bottle to multiple cases for delivery throughout Winnipeg and surrounding areas.

Those looking for a thoughtful gift can opt for custom baskets curated by in-store experts. "We work within any budget, adding treats or special wines and making sure it looks beautiful," says Tibbs.

Seasonal selections and staff picks

The team at the winehouse takes pride in curating seasonal six-pack bundles. "Everyone on staff contributes," says Tibbs. "We pick our favourites and bundle them so people can try a little bit of everything."

Current highlights include a six-pack from New Zealand's The Ned, featuring Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir – perfect for summer sipping.

While traditional trends hold – white wines and rosés in warmer months, reds like Malbec and Cabernet in winter – Tibbs notes a growing demand for white wine year-round. "We’ve expanded our selection of Sauvignon Blancs, Pinot Grigios, and brought in more oaked Chardonnays too."

Top summer sellers include the off-dry Deinhard Riesling from Germany, Montalto Pinot Grigio from Italy, and Chilean Chardonnays like the Montes Alpha Special Cuvée.

A community favourite

At the end of the day, it's about connection. "A good day at work," says Tibbs, "is when I get to chat with customers about what they're cooking, help them find something special, or pour a glass at the wine bar and just enjoy the moment."

With its warm atmosphere, expert guidance, and genuine love for wine, the winehouse continues to be a go-to for everyone from casual sippers to seasoned connoisseurs.
