If you've noticed a hike in gas prices lately, you can thank the weather in Indiana.

The hike largely comes from the temporary shutdown of a refinery in the US.

"The refinery down south in Whiting, Indiana, a BP refinery, experienced some flooding that took place last week, that forced it to go offline," said Matt McClain, a Petroleum Analyst with Gas Buddy. "That actually has a pretty good-sized impact (in) Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, but it's also impacting multiple U.S. states as well."

Prices are up to about $1.34 per litre in Swift Current compared to $1.41 per litre in Saskatchewan on average.

"The good news is BP says that they are in the process of restarting the refinery now," McClain said. "Obviously, they've got to go through all those inspections and all that different stuff to make sure that nothing was damaged in the shutdown process during the flood issue early last week. And assuming that everything is good to go, they should have that online within the next several days, and then we could see prices falling.

"I'm going to hope for this upcoming weekend, Labour Day weekend, but I think it's more than likely early next week and on into the middle of next week that we should see prices start to level off and then start falling again."

McClain felt prices had been pretty steady before this recent shut down.

He expects they will go back to the recent norms unless there are any new major geopolitical issues or weather-related disasters.
