The Blackfalds RCMP detachment hosted its annual community BBQ on Wednesday (August 27) drawing families and community members for a day of food, fun, and interactive demonstrations.
The event, held in the detachment’s parking lot, featured a range of activities for all ages.
Children explored fire trucks while receiving plastic fire hats from the local fire department.
The tactical team showcased their protective gear, letting attendees handle and try on equipment used in real-life operations.
Red Deer County Protective Services set up sand bins for a scavenger-style activity, where participants sifted for toys and coins.
Visitors also had the chance to ride a police Segway and explore patrol vehicles, bikes, trucks, and even a police boat on display.
Kids enjoyed bouncy castles, while Police Dog Services conducted live demonstrations with trained dogs.
Other partners in attendance included community peace officers, tow trucks, STARS Air Ambulance, RCMP Air Services, and “YIELD,” the RCMP Youth Initiative and Education in Lifestyles and Driving, which brought along a modified racing patrol car.
Staff Sgt. Andrew Allan, the Blackfalds Detachment commander, said the turnout and participation were encouraging.
“This went spectacularly,” Allan said. “Between our partner agencies and everyone we work with coming out, and the public, and interacting with one another in an event that isn't call related and doesn't have to do with a crime at the moment is a really good experience for everyone here."
The annual BBQ provides an opportunity for residents to meet RCMP members outside of emergency situations, highlighting partnerships and community engagement while offering a day of family-friendly fun.
