It's a new era in the Canadian Hockey League, and with that comes a new approach to training camp for the Swift Current Broncos.
Now that loss of NCAA eligibility is no longer an impediment for players interested in major junior hockey, Broncos GM Chad Leslie brought in a larger crop of rookies and free agents at camp.
"It will be a larger camp for the rookie camp," Leslie said. "We've added some players and some guys that have been free agents, a little bit older now. No stone goes unturned. This is going to be the first camp that we see some older guys come in that haven't had experience in the league. We'll see how it goes. It will be learning took for us moving forward with the landscape changing to this point."
Leslie credits their scouting staff with finding an assortment of players to look at.
There are six teams of rookies and free agents active today.
Fitness testing was set for this morning with Rookie and Free Agent scrimmages at 7:00 pm, 8:00 pm, and 9:00 pm tonight from InnovationPlex.
You can see 2025 1st round draft pick Cohen Rotar on the roster for Team Gawdin, making his Broncos debut of sorts at 7:00 pm against 2nd round pick Linden Anderson and Team Lowry.
This is the first training camp for new Broncos Head Coach Dean DeSilva.
"It's been a pretty quick off-season with all the hirings and all the work we've had to do to get things in place," Leslie said. "We're excited to get going."
Main Camp starts Saturday evening at 5:30 PM with the annual Blue vs White game on Monday at 1:00 PM.
