The Estevan Taekwondo Club was among the many local groups taking part in Citywide Registration this week, giving families a chance to sign up for the upcoming season.
Club representatives Tina Longny and Simone Saigeon said the evening started out a little quiet but expected more parents to arrive as the night went on. For those who missed registration, families can still sign up at Spruce Ridge School on September 4 and 8 at 6:00 p.m.
The club offers programs for different age groups, including a limited minis class for six- and seven-year-olds starting in October, youth sessions for ages 8 to 14, and adult classes for participants 14 and up. Youth train Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by the adult class from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
Longny explained that volunteers play a big role in the club’s success, with parents helping out at Bruins games as part of a fundraising initiative. “Every parent pays a fee and then once they do their four sessions, the fee is returned to them so that we get the volunteers to do it,” she said.
Looking ahead, the Estevan Taekwondo Club is preparing for its annual tournament, set for late October or early November. The event typically draws between 70 and 100 participants from clubs across Saskatchewan, including Saskatoon, Biggar, and Osler.
Beyond the training and competition, the club emphasizes the traditional values of Taekwondo. “We teach respect, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit,” Longny said. “It not only works in Taekwondo but also translates into everyday life.”
The club aims to balance tradition with fun, ensuring a positive experience for both new and returning students this season.
