The Bow Valley Parkway is once again closed to public vehicles for the fall cycling season.

The 17-kilometre stretch of the scenic roadway is open only to cyclists and pedestrians. The closure runs until October 2, with vehicle access resuming on October 3.

The initiative is part of the Bow Valley Parkway Cycling Experience Pilot, which began in 2022 as a three-year trial. The pilot restricted vehicles in spring and fall to create a safer, quieter experience for cyclists.

Strong public support and high participation levels led Parks Canada to extend the program for another five years, running from 2025 to 2030.

Parks Canada says the extended pilot will allow them to continue gathering data on visitor experience, accessibility, safety, enforcement, and impacts on wildlife. Adjustments may be made as needed under an adaptive management approach.

Cyclists are reminded that access is limited to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, in line with the parkway’s seasonal travel restrictions. Riders are not permitted outside those hours.

The closed section runs between the Fireside Day-use Area and Johnston Canyon. Visitors are encouraged to use the Banff Train Station parking lot when accessing the route.
