The Estevan Sharks Water Polo Club is welcoming new players of all ages as the team gears up for another exciting season. Tracey Ward, representing the Sharks, highlighted the benefits of the sport for kids.
"It's a good way for kids to learn to swim, become strong swimmers while playing a fun team sport," Ward said.
Participants will develop swimming fundamentals while learning water polo skills. Ward explained, "They swim and they're learning to throw the ball. They learn to dribble the ball, which is actually swimming with the ball, and they're aiming at the net and defense, and offense."
The season starts September 14 and runs through the end of March. While most practices include local scrimmages, the Sharks also participate in tournaments. "We'll have one in Estevan and a couple in Regina," Ward said. "And if people are interested, they can go to Provincials in Saskatoon as well."
New members can try water polo with a free two-week trial. Ward noted, "They can try it out just to kind of see if they like it. And then if they decide they register, they can do that."
For those who commit but later decide the sport isn’t for them, the club offers a “trial after registration” option. "If they decide, you know what, water polo is not for me… they can actually just let our club know and we will refund them for the remainder of their club fees for the season," Ward said.
The Sharks also welcome parents to volunteer. "Generally, it's more so parents that are volunteering, but there's always opportunity for volunteering. Every club needs volunteers these days," Ward added.
With the season approaching, the Estevan Sharks invite anyone looking for a fun, team-oriented sport to jump in and give water polo a try.
