A brand new mural was officially unveiled in Swift Current at the walking bridge near Elmwood Park.

Located off of Sixth Avenue Northeast, this mural features local wildlife such as a porcupine, a fox,  and other pieces of southwest Saskatchewan's ecology.

Luke Maddford, curator of exhibitions and programming with the Swift Current Art Gallery, gave a huge congratulations to Marsha Schuld on completing this piece.

"We're really pleased with the mural," said Maddford. "We're really happy to be putting more public art into the community. If you get a chance to see the mural, you'll see that it's really visible from so many different parts of the neighbourhood."

This project took roughly a week to complete, but was in development long before that. Maddaford says that discussions on the final designs took months of deliberation.

"Once we had a good idea of what the mural was going to be, it was brought to the mural committee, which then approved it," said Maddaford. "Then it was bright to the Swift Current city council, and then they approved it."

The goal with this design is to promote not only the local wildlife, but also the community.

The best spot to view the mural, according to Maddaford, is from right in front.

"Because it's on all four sides of the footing (supports for the bridge), you can see it from any direction," said Maddaford. If you really want to appreciate it, go down, take a walk around, and see it up close."

Maddaford is hopeful that in the future, more such murals can be brought into Swift Current's public spaces.
