The Estevan Mermaids Artistic Swimming Club is diving into a new season, with registration well underway and an open invitation for families to get involved.
Club representative Kelsey Potoma said the youngest group, the Mini Mermaids, is already full, but there’s still room in both the recreation and competitive programs. “Our Mini Mermaids have already been filled up so we're really looking to fill our recreation limited and have some more people join us in our competitive program,” she explained.
The club is hosting a Try-It Night on September 3 from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., giving newcomers a chance to experience the sport before committing. “Anybody can come and try our sport out and see if it is something they might be interested in,” said Potoma. “It also gives those already registered a chance to get back in the pool and feel it out before the season begins.”
The programs are open to a wide age range, starting at five years old. Minis are for ages 5–7, while the recreation, limited, and competitive streams begin at age eight or ten and have no upper age limit.
Potoma emphasized that the sport helps participants build both water skills and confidence outside the pool. “We really work on confidence and team building and just building that family connection in our sport. We also find that they really improve on their water skills and can become very confident in the water,” she said.
The Mermaids also welcome people of all ages, genders, and abilities. However, Potoma noted that the club is in urgent need of volunteers. “All of our coaches are volunteers. If anybody’s interested in coaching or learning, we are more than willing to set them up with a coaching course. We are very low on coaches, so we are looking at maybe having to cut some of our programs if we can’t get more help.”
Families or volunteers interested in joining the Estevan Mermaids are encouraged to reach out to the club for more information.
